What is Cancer?
Cancer is a condition where cells in a specific part of the body grow and reproduce uncontrollably. The cancerous cells can invade and destroy surrounding healthy tissue, including organs. 1 in 2 people may develop some form of cancer during their lifetime.
According to the NHS, in the UK, the 5 most common types of cancer are:
- Breast Cancer
- Lung Cancer
- Prostate Cancer
- Bowel Cancer
- Melanoma Skin Cancer
Signs & Symptoms of Cancer
You don’t need to remember every possible sign or symptom of cancer – just listen to your body and speak to your doctor if you notice anything unusual for you. Most signs and symptoms are caused by something less serious than cancer, but if it is cancer, spotting it early can make a big difference. What support is available?
You can contact our Cancer Care Coordinator, Louise McMullen, who works across all four practices in the Newport and Central PCN. Her aim is to provide a support service to cancer patients right from diagnosis and beyond, offering a dedicated cancer care review appointment within 9 months of being diagnosed. Louise offers face to face appointments of 45 minutes or telephone calls for anyone who has any non–clinical concerns or worries.
Louise is based in practices on the following days:
- Tuesday – Wellington Road Surgery
- Wednesday – Shawbirch Medical Centre
- Thursday – Linden Hall Surgery
- Friday – Donnington Medical Practice
